APDSF Games 2026 Conclude Successfully at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium

The Asia Pacific Down Syndrome Federation (APDSF) Games 2026 concluded successfully in Chennai, celebrating the spirit of inclusion, determination, and sporting excellence. The Games were hosted at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and the Nehru Indoor Stadium, bringing together self-advocates and athletes from across the Asia-Pacific region.Organized by APDSF in association with Special Olypics Bharat, these games bore testimony to the grit and determination of Persons with Down syndrome and their never say die attitude,

Athletes from Bhutan, Singapore, Myanmar, Nepal, Mongolia, and India competed in the Games, creating a vibrant platform for international friendship, cultural exchange, and sporting excellence.

Sporting Venues and Events

The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium hosted outdoor athletic events including walking and running races, shot put, softball throw, and bocce. The Nehru Indoor Stadium was the venue for skating and swimming, with athletes demonstrating remarkable skill, focus, and sportsmanship across all disciplines.

A Powerful and Inclusive Inauguration

The inauguration ceremony set a proud and inspiring tone for the Games. The event began with a March Past by self-advocates from all participating countries, led by a band from Kerala featuring children with Down syndrome, symbolizing unity, confidence, and inclusion.

One of the most moving moments of the ceremony was the lighting of the ceremonial torch by leaders who are trailblazers in their own right:

  • Babli, the first national medal winner, whose achievement opened doors for future athletes
  • Devanshi, a recipient of multiple honours, including the National Award for Persons with Disabilities, conferred by the Honourable President of India
  • Arti, a multiple award winner at the Special Olympics, representing excellence at the international level
  • Joshna Chinnappa, member of the Indian team that won the World Squash Championship, and a global ambassador for Indian sport
  • Mr. Muneer Sait, member of the Indian Hockey Team that won the Bronze Medal at the 1968 Mexico Olympics

Together, they lit the torch, symbolizing achievement, leadership, and the belief that excellence transcends all barriers.

The Chief Guest, Mr. Meghanatha Reddy, IAS, Member Secretary, Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, then took the salute, acknowledging the athletes and delegations.

Addresses and Declaration

The ceremony continued with opening remarks by Mr. Ashish Bhengra, Secretary General, Asia Pacific Down Syndrome Federation, who spoke about the vision of APDSF and the transformative role of inclusive sport.

This was followed by an address by the Chief Guest, highlighting the importance of equal opportunity, dignity, and accessible sporting platforms.

The inauguration concluded with the official declaration of the APDSF Games 2026 open by the Chief Guest, marking the beginning of the competitions.
